EndNote: Referencing software

  • EndNote icon software | Publicly viewable | v. X7

Use EndNote to build a library of the papers, books and other text you encounter in your research. EndNote also helps you insert citations to those works into your own word-processed documents and papers.

A bibliography is assembled automatically in each document you write. Apply (and easily change) a style, which ensures that all the citations and the bibliography are correctly presented and formatted.

EndNote X8 is the current version for Windows and for Mac

The new version includes a tool for creating a categorised bibliography, such as Primary Sources and Secondary Sources.

If you have EndNote X7, make sure you get the free software update to version X7.7 (Windows or Mac).

EndNote software options

EndNote on the Desktop

Oxford University has a site licence for EndNote. This allows EndNote to be installed on computers that belong to the University, without further charge. Contact your IT support team to ask to have EndNote installed or updated on a University-owned computer.

If you want to use EndNote on a computer that is personally owned, you must pay for a licenced copy of the software. Individuals can purchase EndNote from the IT Services Shop.

Alternatively, visit Adept Science who sometimes offer discounts for students (on production of university credentials).

A 30-day trial version of EndNote may be available free from EndNote. Read an article about keeping your EndNote software up to date.

EndNote and Word

If EndNote is to operate successfully as an add-in for Word, you must install Word on your computer first, then install EndNote second. There are constraints on which version of EndNote will work with each version of Word. For software compatibility, look at this article.

EndNote online

EndNote online is a "cloud" service, for which you set up an account (username and password). A member of Oxford University can have a free account for EndNote online, which may be associated with an account for Web Of Knowledge.

On its own, it offers some of the same functions as EndNote on the desktop, but with fewer options and customisations.

If you later decide to purchase the full product, EndNote online continues to provide a useful companion, as the online library can easily be synced with the desktop library.

EndNote app for iPad

An app is now available for the iPad, which collaborates smoothly with your EndNote online account for collecting references from online sources. The introductory offer is priced at $1 (around 69p in UK), but that may change.

If you feel that a similar app should be available for Android or other platforms, do by all means lobby the EndNote company ...
